Edit a PDF on iPhone & iPad
The iPhone and iPad have surprisingly good built-in PDF tools. TheFiles app can view, annotate, rotate, and (in iOS 16 and later) insert, delete, and reorder pages. Markupadds text, shapes, highlights, and a signature. IXPDFruns in Safari on iOS and handles watermark, metadata, and page-level edits without uploading. Adobe Acrobat Reader for iOS is free for viewing and form filling; Acrobat Pro features require a subscription. This guide walks through each, what it does well, and where it stops — so you pick the right tool for the edit you need.
What "edit a PDF" means on iPhone and iPad
Before picking a tool, decide which kind of edit you need. The four kinds are:
- Page-level edits — reorder, rotate, insert, or delete pages. The text on each page does not change; only the sequence or orientation does. Files (iOS 16+) andIXPDF in Safari both handle these.
- Document-level edits — add a watermark, change metadata (title, author, subject, keywords), or compress the file.IXPDF in Safari handles these.
- Visual text edits — fix a typo, replace a sentence, reflow a paragraph. No free iOS tool does this well. Adobe Acrobat Pro (subscription) can. IXPDF cannot today.
- Annotations and signatures — highlight, underline, add shapes, add a signature. Markup (built into iOS) does these natively and well.
For a deeper walkthrough of all four edit types across every OS, seeHow to Edit a PDF (Free Methods for Every OS).
Method 1: Annotate and edit pages in Files + Markup (free, built into iOS)
The Files app on iOS 16 and later can do more than view PDFs — it can rotate pages, insert pages from another PDF, delete pages, and reorder them. Markup (the annotation system built into iOS) adds text, shapes, highlights, and a signature. Both work offline and never upload anything.
Annotate with Markup
- Open the PDF in the Files app.
- Tap the Markup icon (the pen in the top-right).
- Pick a tool: pen, highlighter, eraser, text, signature, or shapes.
- For a signature, use + → Signature (draw with your finger or Apple Pencil on iPad).
- Tap Done to save. The annotations are saved into the PDF.
Rotate, insert, delete, or reorder pages (iOS 16+)
- Open the PDF in Files.
- Tap the page thumbnail icon (top-left) to enter page view.
- Rotate: tap and hold a page, then choose Rotate Left / Rotate Right. Delete: tap and hold, then Delete. Reorder: drag pages into a new order.Insert: tap and hold between two pages, then Insert Page (blank) or Insert from File.
- Tap Done to save.
Honest limits of Files + Markup
- No text editing. Markup adds text on top of the page; it cannot reflow or replace existing text. For a typo you need Acrobat Pro.
- No watermark tool. You can simulate a stamp with a text box, but it is not a true translucent watermark. Use IXPDF Add Watermark in Safari instead.
- No metadata editor. Use IXPDF Edit Metadata in Safari to change title, author, subject, and keywords.
- Page-level edits require iOS 16+. On older iOS versions, Files can only view and annotate.
Method 2: Edit PDF metadata, watermark, and pages in IXPDF (Safari, free)
For document-level edits — watermark, metadata, compress — and for page-level edits when you want a clean interface, IXPDF runs in Safari on iOS (and iPadOS). The file is processed in a Web Worker and never uploaded. On iOS, the result is offered as a download you can save to Files or iCloud Drive.
- In Safari, open /tools/add-watermark/ (or rotate, reorder, merge, split, metadata — whichever edit you need).
- Tap to choose a file, or drop it if you are on iPad with drag-and-drop. The file stays in browser memory; it is not uploaded.
- Apply the edit (type watermark text, pick a rotation, enter a new page order, etc.).
- Tap Run. The Worker processes the file and returns a new PDF.
- Download the result. Save to Files or iCloud Drive, then verify by opening it.

Method 3: Adobe Acrobat Reader / Pro for iOS (free viewer; Pro is subscription)
Adobe Acrobat Reader for iOS is free and can view, annotate, fill forms, and sign. The Pro features — edit text in place, redact, compress, organize pages — require an Adobe Acrobat Pro subscription (in-app purchase). If you edit PDFs daily on iOS, the subscription is the most complete option. For occasional edits, Files + Markup and IXPDF in Safari cover most needs free. SeeHow to Edit a PDF in Adobe Acrobat for the desktop walkthrough that mirrors the iOS Pro feature set.

Common mistakes on iPhone and iPad
- Using a "free online PDF editor" for a sensitive document. Most free web editors upload your file to a server. Use Files + Markup or IXPDF in Safari for anything sensitive — both run locally on your device.
- Expecting Markup to edit text. Markup adds text on top of the page; it cannot change existing text. For text edits you need Acrobat Pro.
- Editing the only copy. Save a copy to iCloud Drive or Files before editing, especially with Markup which writes into the original.
- Expecting page-level edits on old iOS. Files can only reorder, rotate, insert, and delete pages on iOS 16 and later. On older iOS, use IXPDF in Safari for those edits.
