Edit a PDF on Mac

🔒 Your files never leave your device. All processing happens locally in your browser.

macOS ships with one of the best free PDF editors already installed:Preview. For most page-level edits — reorder, rotate, delete, merge, annotate, sign — Preview does the job without installing anything. For watermarking and metadata edits, IXPDF runs in your browser (Safari, Chrome, or Firefox on the Mac) and never uploads the file. For visual text editing (fixing a typo inside a paragraph), you need Adobe Acrobat Pro, which is paid. This guide walks through each option, what it does well, and where it stops — so you pick the right tool for the edit you actually need.

What "edit a PDF" means on a Mac

Before picking a tool, decide which kind of edit you need. The four kinds are:

  1. Page-level edits — reorder, rotate, extract, or delete pages. The text on each page does not change; only the sequence or orientation does. Preview andIXPDF both handle these on the Mac.
  2. Document-level edits — add a watermark, change metadata (title, author, subject, keywords), or compress the file.IXPDF handles these in the browser.Preview can compress via Export → Quartz Filter.
  3. Visual text edits — fix a typo, replace a sentence, reflow a paragraph. Only Adobe Acrobat Pro does this well on the Mac. Preview cannot. IXPDF cannot today.
  4. Annotations and signatures — highlight, underline, add shapes, add a signature. Preview does these natively and well.

For a deeper walkthrough of all four edit types across every OS, seeHow to Edit a PDF (Free Methods for Every OS).

Pick the edit type first
If you only need to reorder, rotate, watermark, or change metadata, skip Acrobat — Preview and IXPDF do those free on the Mac with no upload. Reach for Acrobat Pro only when you need to fix text inside a page.

Method 1: Edit PDF pages in Preview (free, built into macOS)

Preview is the default PDF viewer on macOS and ships with every Mac. It cannot fix text inside a page, but it is excellent for page-level edits, annotations, and signatures. It works offline and never uploads anything.

Reorder, rotate, or delete pages

  1. Open the PDF in Preview.
  2. Show thumbnails: View → Thumbnails (or ⌥⌘2).
  3. Reorder by dragging thumbnails up or down.Rotate with the rotate button in the toolbar (or ⌘L / ⌘R). Delete by selecting a thumbnail and pressing Delete.
  4. Save with File → Save, or File → Export to keep the original intact.

Annotate, highlight, or add a signature

  1. Open the PDF and click the Show Markup Toolbar button (the toolbox icon).
  2. Pick a tool: text, shapes, highlight, notes, or signature.
  3. For a signature, use Sign → Trackpad (draw with your finger) or Sign → Camera (sign on paper, hold up to the camera).
  4. Place, resize, and save. Annotations are saved into the PDF.

Honest limits of Preview

  • No text editing. Preview cannot reflow or replace text in a PDF page. To fix a typo you need Acrobat Pro.
  • No watermark tool. You can simulate a stamp with a text box, but it is not a true translucent watermark. Use IXPDF Add Watermark instead.
  • Edits write to the original by default. Use File → Export to save a copy if you want to keep the original.
  • No metadata editor. Use IXPDF Edit Metadata to change title, author, subject, and keywords.

Method 2: Edit PDF metadata, watermark, and pages in IXPDF (browser, free)

For document-level edits — watermark, metadata, compress — and for page-level edits when you do not want to open Preview, IXPDF runs in any modern browser on the Mac (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Arc). The file is processed in a Web Worker and never uploaded.

  1. Open /tools/add-watermark/ (or rotate, reorder, merge, split, metadata — whichever edit you need).
  2. Drop your PDF or click to choose a file. The file stays in browser memory; it is not uploaded.
  3. Apply the edit (type watermark text, pick a rotation, enter a new page order, etc.).
  4. Click Run. The Worker processes the file and returns a new PDF.
  5. Download the result. Verify by opening it in Preview.

What about visual text editing in IXPDF?
IXPDF cannot fix a typo or reflow a paragraph inside a PDF page today. Visual text editing in a browser-based PDF engine is technically hard — PDFs are not word-processor documents, and editing text streams without breaking layout requires reconstructing the page's content model. This is Future work for IXPDF (AGENTS.md §16: PDF Editor is Future). Until then, use Adobe Acrobat Pro on the Mac for visual text edits.

Method 3: Adobe Acrobat Pro (paid, the full editor)

Acrobat Pro is the reference PDF editor. It can edit text in place (reflowing paragraphs), edit images, redact content, add page numbers and headers/footers, flatten forms, and much more. It is paid software and not browser-based. If you edit PDFs daily for a job, Acrobat Pro is the tool that has every feature. For occasional edits, Preview and IXPDF cover most needs free. SeeHow to Edit a PDF in Adobe Acrobat for the full walkthrough.

Common mistakes on Mac

  • Editing the only copy in Preview. Preview writes to the original file by default. Use File → Exportor duplicate the file first (⌘D in Finder).
  • Using a "free online PDF editor" for a sensitive document. Most free web editors upload your file to a server. Use Preview or IXPDF for anything sensitive — both run locally on your Mac.
  • Expecting Preview to edit text. Preview is a viewer and page editor, not a word processor. For text edits you need Acrobat Pro or Word (via Word's PDF import).
