IXPDF vs WPS Office: Free PDF Tools Comparison
WPS Office is a capable freemium desktop office suite with a built-in PDF reader and editor. IXPDF is a free, browser-local PDF toolkit that covers the everyday PDF tasks (merge, split, compress, rotate, watermark, metadata, image conversion) without an install or an upload. This page is an honest comparison so you can pick the right tool for the job. The short version: WPS Office is the right choice when you need to create or edit Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or edit PDF text in place; IXPDF is the right choice for quick PDF organize / compress / convert tasks on sensitive files, with no install and no cost.
The core difference
Scope, install, and where the file goes
Three differences shape the decision. Scope:WPS Office is a full office suite — word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, and PDF tools — so you can create and edit the source documents, not just the PDF. IXPDF is a focused PDF toolkit; it does not create or edit Office documents. Install: IXPDF runs in any modern browser with no install; WPS is a desktop application you download (~300 MB) and install. Where the file goes: IXPDF processes the file in your browser — the file never leaves your device; WPS processes locally on your machine too, but the install itself and any WPS Cloud sync involve Kingsoft's infrastructure.
For a sensitive PDF on a machine you do not own (a public computer, a locked-down work laptop where you cannot install software), IXPDF works in the browser with no install and no upload. For creating or editing Office documents, WPS Office is the better tool — IXPDF cannot do that.
Feature comparison
What each tool can do
The table below covers the common PDF tasks. "WPS" here means WPS Office 2024 with the WPS PDF app — Free tier unless noted, with Pro/Premium gating called out (see theEdit PDF in WPS guide for the plan split).
| Task | IXPDF | WPS Office |
|---|---|---|
| Merge PDFs | ✅ Free, local | ✅ PDF Tools → Merge |
| Split PDF | ✅ Free, local | ✅ PDF Tools (page delete) |
| Compress PDF | ✅ Structure re-pack | ⚠️ Limited in Free |
| Rotate pages | ✅ Free, local | ✅ Free |
| Add watermark | ✅ Free, local | ⚠️ Pro / Premium |
| Edit metadata | ✅ Free, local | ✅ Document properties |
| PDF ↔ JPG/PNG | ✅ Free, local | ⚠️ Limited in Free |
| Edit text in place | ❌ Not supported | ⚠️ Pro / Premium |
| Create / edit Office docs | ❌ Not supported | ✅ Writer, Spreadsheet, Presentation |
| OCR (scanned → text) | ❌ Research Required | ⚠️ Premium |
| Password protect | ✅ Free, local | ✅ PDF Tools |
| Digital signature | ❌ Research Required | ⚠️ Pro / Premium |
| Office → PDF export | ❌ Not supported | ✅ Save As PDF (Free) |
IXPDF's gaps are honest: in-place text editing, OCR, digital signatures, and Office document creation all require capabilities our current browser engine does not have. We mark them Research Required rather than ship fake tools (AGENTS.md §16). WPS Office is the right tool for those tasks. WPS's gaps on the Free tier are equally honest: several PDF editing features are gated to Pro / Premium.
Cost & install
Free browser tool vs freemium desktop suite
- IXPDF cost: Free. No subscription, no Pro tier, no account.
- WPS Office cost: Freemium. WPS Free covers viewing, annotation, Office → PDF export, and basic PDF tools. WPS Pro (~$30/year) and WPS Premium (~$50/year) unlock in-place PDF text/image editing, watermark, page numbers, OCR, and batch tools. Pricing varies by region.
- IXPDF install: None. Runs in any modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari).
- WPS install: Desktop application, ~300 MB download, requires install. Available on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS.
- IXPDF file size: Bounded by your device's RAM. A 200 MB PDF works on a modern laptop; a 2 GB PDF may not.
- WPS file size: Handles large PDFs well; bounded by disk and memory.
Privacy
What each tool sees
Both IXPDF and WPS Office process files locally — neither uploads your PDF content to a server during editing. The difference is the surrounding infrastructure. IXPDF is a static website with no backend; there is nowhere for a file to go even if something went wrong. WPS Office is a desktop app that can sync to WPS Cloud if you opt in — that sync uploads files to Kingsoft's servers. If you use WPS, keep Cloud sync off for sensitive files.
IXPDF analytics (if GA4 is configured) carry only the tool name and aggregate success/size buckets — never file content, file names, or metadata.
Practical
When to use IXPDF, when to use WPS Office
Use IXPDF when: the task is merge, split, compress, rotate, watermark, metadata, or PDF↔image conversion; the file is sensitive and you want zero upload risk; you are on a machine where you cannot install software (a Chromebook, a locked-down work laptop, a public computer); or you do not want to pay for a one-off task.
Use WPS Office when: you need to create or edit a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint document; you need to edit text in place inside a PDF (Pro / Premium); you need OCR on a scanned PDF (Premium); or you want a single offline app for all your office work.
Use both: create the document in WPS Office, export to PDF, then use IXPDF to compress, merge, watermark, or strip metadata before sharing. The two are complements, not substitutes — WPS handles the source documents, IXPDF handles the finished PDF.
