IXPDF vs Adobe Acrobat: Free Online PDF Tools Comparison

Adobe Acrobat Pro is the most capable PDF editor on the market — and it is paid. IXPDF is a free, browser-local toolkit that covers the everyday PDF tasks (merge, split, compress, rotate, watermark, metadata) without an install or an upload. This page is an honest comparison so you can pick the right tool for the job. The short version: Acrobat Pro is the right choice for in-place text editing, OCR, redaction, and digital signatures; IXPDF is the right choice for quick organize/compress/convert tasks on sensitive files, with no install and no cost.

The core difference

Cost, install, and where the file goes

Three differences shape the decision. Cost:IXPDF is free; Acrobat Pro is a subscription (~$20/month) or a perpetual license (~$450). Install: IXPDF runs in any modern browser with no install; Acrobat is a desktop application you download and activate. Where the file goes: IXPDF processes the file in your browser — the file never leaves your device; Acrobat processes locally on your machine too, but the install itself and any Document Cloud sync involve Adobe's infrastructure.

For a sensitive file on a machine you do not own (a public computer, a locked-down work laptop where you cannot install software), IXPDF works in the browser with no install and no upload. For heavy editing on your own machine, Acrobat Pro is the better tool.

Feature comparison

What each tool can do

The table below covers the common PDF tasks. "Acrobat" here means Acrobat Pro DC 2024 unless noted — Standard and Reader have subsets (see the Edit PDF in Acrobat guide for the edition split).

TaskIXPDFAdobe Acrobat Pro
Merge PDFs✅ Free, local✅ Combine Files
Split PDF✅ Free, local✅ Organize Pages
Compress PDF✅ Structure re-pack✅ Optimize PDF (full control)
Rotate pages✅ Free, local✅ Organize Pages
Add watermark✅ Free, local✅ Watermark tool
Edit metadata✅ Free, local✅ Document Properties
PDF ↔ JPG/PNG✅ Free, local✅ Export PDF
Edit text in place❌ Not supported✅ Edit Text & Images
OCR (scanned → text)❌ Research Required✅ Scan & OCR
Redaction❌ Not supported✅ Redact tool
Password protect⚠️ Research Required✅ Protect tool
Digital signature❌ Research Required✅ Certificates
PDF to Word/Excel❌ Not supported✅ Export PDF (Pro)

IXPDF's gaps are honest: in-place text editing, OCR, redaction, password encryption, and digital signatures all require capabilities our current browser engine does not have. We mark them Research Required rather than ship fake tools (AGENTS.md §16). Acrobat Pro is the right tool for those tasks.

Cost & install

Free browser tool vs paid desktop app

  • IXPDF cost: Free. No subscription, no Pro tier, no account.
  • Acrobat Pro cost: Subscription (~$20/month as of 2026-09-06) or perpetual license (~$450). Acrobat Standard is cheaper but lacks OCR, redaction, and print production.
  • Acrobat Reader: Free, but cannot edit, compress, or combine. Can fill forms, sign (Fill & Sign), and comment.
  • IXPDF install: None. Runs in any modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari).
  • Acrobat install: Desktop application, ~1 GB download, requires activation. Available on Windows and macOS.
  • IXPDF file size: Bounded by your device's RAM. A 200 MB PDF works on a modern laptop; a 2 GB PDF may not.
  • Acrobat file size: Handles very large PDFs well; bounded by disk and memory.

Privacy

What each tool sees

Both IXPDF and Acrobat Pro process files locally — neither uploads your PDF content to a server during editing. The difference is the surrounding infrastructure. IXPDF is a static website with no backend; there is nowhere for a file to go even if something went wrong. Acrobat is a desktop app that can sync to Adobe Document Cloud if you opt in — that sync uploads files to Adobe's servers. If you use Acrobat, keep Document Cloud sync off for sensitive files.

IXPDF analytics (if GA4 is configured) carry only the tool name and aggregate success/size buckets — never file content, file names, or metadata.

Practical

When to use IXPDF, when to use Acrobat

Use IXPDF when: the task is merge, split, compress, rotate, watermark, metadata, or PDF↔image conversion; the file is sensitive and you want zero upload risk; you are on a machine where you cannot install software (a Chromebook, a locked-down work laptop, a public computer); or you do not want to pay for a one-off task.

Use Adobe Acrobat Pro when: you need to edit text in place, run OCR on a scanned PDF, redact sensitive content, add a digital signature with a certificate, optimize a PDF with fine-grained image control, or convert a PDF to an editable Word/Excel file. These are tasks IXPDF cannot do today.

Use Acrobat Reader when: you only need to read, fill a form, or apply a simple electronic signature (Fill & Sign is free in Reader).

The two are complements, not substitutes. Many users keep Acrobat Pro for heavy editing and use IXPDF for the quick organize/compress tasks on sensitive files — the best of both worlds.
